Experience the past

The ancient Romans left their mark during Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis’ eventful past: the Via Claudia Augusta was a major Roman road that led across the Fiss Plateau, connecting northern Italy with southern Germany. Another, darker period in Austria's history concerns the region's post-war smuggling, when the impoverished population resorted to smuggling goods from Samnaun in Switzerland in order to make ends meet. This was a difficult and dangerous journey that only the very bravest dared to embark on. Thanks to their superior knowledge of the mountains and the deep solidarity that existed between the smugglers they were mostly able to dodge the customs officers’ efforts to capture them. Cigarettes, nylons and coffee were among the most sought-after goods that were illegally transported from Switzerland to Innsbruck. Today, you can follow in the footsteps of legendary Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis smugglers such as Roland Schwenningen, Erwin Jörg and Möderle, king of the smugglers. The smugglers trail in Serfaus is dotted with information points where walkers can find out about the routes, secret signals and adversities faced by the smugglers.
